Planning your film’s audio from the start is essential for a smooth production process. In pre-production, consider how sound will enhance your story—this includes dialogue, ambient sound, and music. Communicate with your sound team early on, so they can prepare for location sound challenges and identify key moments where sound will play a significant role.
During production, ensure that you’re capturing high-quality sound on set, minimising noise interference and capturing clean dialogue. Doing so will save hours in post-production, where fixing poorly recorded audio can be challenging. Consider recording wild tracks (ambient sound) for each location to use in post.
In post-production, sound design and mixing are where your audio plan truly comes to life. Layering dialogue, sound effects, music, and ambient sound brings depth to the film and can dramatically enhance the audience’s emotional experience. Starting early and keeping sound in mind throughout production will lead to a more cohesive and impactful film.
